How Will The CNA Certification Exam Work?
It may seem as though going through your course work from the textbook and curriculum was enough, but most employers prefer something extra. In order to become certified as a nursing assistant, you will need to pass a two part exam. The CNA exam is both a written and practical exam and you have to pass both. If you fail, you will either have to take the exam again or resign yourself to making less money and having fewer chances to work. As you can see, it's pretty important to prepar properly for the exam! But it doesn't have to be brutal: with the right preparation, care, and paying attention, you can pass your exam and become certified as a nursing assistant.
Prepping Yourself for the Exam
Before you do anything else, you will have to set up a date for your exam. This date must lie within a ninety day from the day you completed your coursework. If you did your course through a college, you will be able to easily set up a date through the school; in fact, the college may set it up for you. If you have done the coursework on your own, you can set up an exam time through your state health board. Once you've pinned down the date for your exam, you can then spend your time studying. Try picking up a few CNA study guides or downloading a few so that you can pinpoint the areas you need more study and concentrate on areas where you need to do more work. It's pretty easy to get a hold of CNA study guides since you can download them or purchase them through your college and they are a great study tool.
Written Exam
The written part of the full certification exam is usually in a multiple choice and/or simple answer question format and the intent is to test everything you should have learned about becoming a CNA in your classes. These questions will ask everything from ethics to vocabulary, so make sure that you have studied your notes and listened in lecture. The written exam is usually done in a small room and you will either be writing it alone under supervision, or in a small supervised group in order to reduce cheating efforts.
The Practical CNA Exam
The practical exam is the truly important part of certification because it tests you on how to do different procedures in a real world setting, of course under careful supervision from a registered nurse. These practicals will test how well you can do basic skills such turning over a patient, bathing a patient, feeding him or her, helping a patient get up and down and all while respecting basic dignity and privacy. These are things that will come up in a routine work day and so they are important to perfect. Usually there will be between three and five basic skills tested and you have to prove you've mastered them all in order to pass the exam.
The certification exam is stressful, but important. The exam will show whether or not you are truly ready to work as a nursing assistant help you get better work. While it's not necessary to become certified to work, most employers vastly prefer it and if you skip this, you will be cheating yourself out of more money and more employment. Study, do the work to get ready for the exam and make sure to take care of yourself so that you can do the exam and pass it. Once it's finished, you will be able to enjoy all of the benefits of becoming a full CNA.
