Investing In Law School A Dangerous Bet For Many Aspiring Lawyers
The payoff for committing to a legal education is questionable. Tuition at most law schools is increasing rapidly. At the exact same time well-paying jobs within the lawful industry are scarce. Law school debt cannot be paid with the wage of an attorney
The number of people taking the LSAT jumped more than 20 percent between 2007 and 2009. But this year a growing number of law students and law school graduates are unemployed, underemployed and deeply in student loan debt. Annie Lowery at Slate accounts that as of 2008, public law school students graduated with an average of $71,436 in debt. Private law graduates had even higher amounts of debt. It had been about $91,506 for them. Lowery writes that a starting salary that would make law school a good investment is about $65,000. Most jobs accessible to law school graduate students pay from $45,000 to $60,000.
Return on investment is better when there are fewer attorneys
Herwig Schlunk is a Vanderbilt law professor. In 2009, he came out with a study about law school investments called "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be … Lawyers." The study is all about the investment of law school. He talks about whether or not it is worth it. The report discusses some of the opportunity cost of lost income while going to school. The high student loan debt is discussed also. Schlunk makes a point of saying you will find only a few “hot prospects” that will do well after law school. It is only worth it for them to do law school.
It is too far gone to take back the law degree
Schlunk’s lesson was learned in a terrible way by a law student at the Boston College law school. According to AFP, the dean of BC law got a letter from a student. The tuition is over $40,000 a year at that school. When graduating in 2011, the student didn’t think finding a job would be possible when in financial debt and preparing to be a father. Instead, he offered to quit BC Law in exchange for a refund of his tuition, describing the offer as a win-win situation. He wouldn’t have the terrible debt anymore while being able to teach again and provide for a family. BC Law would in turn not have to record his future joblessness to the US News and World Report. This can be a magazine that gives United States of America law schools rankings. This was not something BC Law had been willing to do. The offer had been denied.
